Hi Panthers!! Next week is Thanksgiving Holiday, so NO school Wednesday November 26th, Thursday November 27th OR Friday November 28th. Enjoy the long weekend :)
Here is an update on what we have been doing in class:
Writing:
This week students worked on using the question to write the first sentence of your response, we call this a restatement.
Question: After reading the passage tell three ways that trees and bushes are alike…
Response: Trees and bushes are alike in three ways including ____, ____ and ____.
Students also worked on telling is the author’s purpose is to entertain, give information or to persuade.
We discussed that words help create the image in the writers mind. That we can give more detail by telling who? What? When? Where? Why? And How something happened.
We reviewed nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. We also noticed that sometimes adverbs are transition words. For example:
Frequently they passed the books around to make certain everyone read them.
Every day we write in our agendas.
Inside the house the boys sits and plays his drums.
We took some simple sentences and wrote super sentences… Wow! We have some amazing authors in this room! I have a lot of fun reading their stories!!!
Math :
We have been working on multiplication and division with units of 7, 8, and 9! Your little one is growing to be quite the mathematician. We have also been working on dissecting and understanding story problems, focusing on what information we know and what we do not know. Looking at what the question is asking us to solve and what do we need to know to solve that question.
It takes time to think about the questions and how we need to respond and solve them!
Reading:
Good readers stop and think about what they’ve read. In reading students are stopping and asking questions about the story. Then they are stopping to share and discuss the answers they’ve found. You can practice this Stop and Think strategy with your child at home.
Science:
We have been reading about trees and how they grown and how they make homes for animals. We have looked at pictures of many different types of trees including Banyan Trees and Mangrove trees.
We have also been focusing on ecosystems and environments from all around the world. For these little desert babies, they are finding it very enjoyable and exciting to see tropical and artic environments.
Social Studies:
For each story we stop and look at the map. We saw that Banyan Trees grow in Hawaii, Sequoia grow in California and Mangroves grow in Florida so we looked for those states on the map.. We went to the play The Yellow Boat and saw that the family is Scandinavian… so we looked at Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland on the map to see the countries that make up Scandanavia.
We looked at the world map and discussed the difference between the physical map which shows mountains and elevations and the political map which shows countries.
We are super busy here in Room 15, and we are learning some exciting things!
Next week, we will be looking at the history of Thanksgiving and how this tradition came to be. Also, your little one will be thinking about what they are truly thankful for.
See you soon!
