Welcome back 3rd graders!
I hope everyone had an amazing break and had time to relax, have fun, and just enjoy a break from our daily schedule.
We are going to be starting on some exciting things this week, turning a focus on reading science and learning about our animals and environments.
This week we are starting our research for our animal reports. The report will cover multiple topics about one animal and we will be working on filling out our research packet in class. Your child will be learning about their animal's anatomy and appearnace, habitat, diet, lifecycle, behaviors, defense/offense, enemies, adaptations and more!
It is such an exciting report to learn about a wide variety of animals and to prepare us for our field trip to the Zoo in February.
With the animal report comes a great opportunity for your child to practice their handwriting. I cannot stress how important it is that as third gradres, we take the time to write neatly and carefully--so that people can read our work. This is a skill that will last your child through their lifetime, so please, make sure they are writing neatly and practicing their penminship.
Reading is also something that is crucial to every child. Remember, your child should be reading 100 or more words per minute by the end of the school year. The thirty minutes of reading every night that I assign for homework is meant to help reach that goal, and help your child become a fluent and better reader.
It is always more beneficial if you sit down with your child and listen to them read and read with them. That way they can interact with someone they care about and a good book.
Coming back after break I really want to stress the importance of perseverance. I have been working with students on not giving up because something does not come easy to them or if they become confused. That we must work together, ask for help. and try our best becuase we should be proud of our work and what we can do.
After watching the kids take the last State Benchmark test, I noticed that this is something they are not neccessarily grasping. When we see a problem we do not understand, instead of giving up or making a guess, we must try our hardest to solve the problem in any way we can.
Lastly, we will be having a field trip on February 10th, we will be going to the Phoenix Zoo. I will be sending home the permission slips soon. PLEASE CONTACT me if you are able to be a chaperon because I need to make sure you are cleared with office to accompany us! :)
If you have any questions, please feel free to call or e-mail me.
Have a lovely week!
Love,
Ms. Marsh
